Keyhaven Marshes – 11 July

Our last guided walk before the summer break is an evening walk at Keyhaven Marshes on Saturday, 11 July.    The walk will start at 6.30pm from the car park opposite the Gun Inn – Grid Ref: SZ 306 915 (please note that parking charges apply). There may be some free parking available along the harbour wall.   Non-members are welcome.  Walks are free of charge, but a small donation from non-members would be appreciated.  This is a good walk for beginners and we will try to get back before the kitchen closes at the Gun Inn.

Wildlife Campaigns

Those interested in conservation of our native fauna and flora are being asked by a number of organisations to support their campaigns, by signing letters or petitions or contacting politicians through standard emails.  Here are some that you might be interested in:

  • Plantlife UK are calling for better management of our roadside verges, which are the last refuge for rare plants and insects that can no longer colonise agricultural land;
  • the lobby organisation 38 Degrees is asking people to email ministers to maintain the ban on pesticides that are toxic to bees, which has been in place for two years, but could now be lifted:
  • RSPB is calling for people  sign a petition to save the EU Nature Directive, which is currently under threat from business interests.

Birds of Namibia

Our next indoor meeting will be on Wednesday 10 June, which will be our last indoor meeting of the summer.  We are delighted that Richard Coomber will be sharing with us his knowledge of birding in South-west Africa.  Richard is an experienced speaker and tour guide having led birding trips to locations all around the globe.  He is also a member of our RSPB New Forest Local Group.
