RSPB New Forest Local Group
Formed in 2000, the RSPB New Forest Local Group comprises local people interested in birds, nature and conservation. We hold a monthly indoor meeting on the second Wednesday of each month (except July and August) at Lyndhurst, which features guest speakers and a chance to get together to chat about what’s happening locally. There are two organised bird walks each month, one at a weekend, the other mid-week, generally around good local bird-watching sites, but occasionally further afield. The programme is detailed under the “Talks” and “Walks” menu headings or you can download the RSPB New Forest Local Group Programme 2017-2018 .
The group welcomes new members and it is not essential to be a member of the RSPB. If you would like to join, you can do so at any of our indoor meetings at Lyndhurst or by completing and returning a RSPB Membership Form 2017-18.
There is more about the RSPB New Forest Local Group on the RSPB‘s website.
Garden Bird Survey (GBS)
For most of the life of the group, members have been recording the species of bird using, not flying over, their gardens each week. This information has been collated each quarter and a GBS report produced indicating both the number of gardens visited by different bird species and the number of “garden weeks” that the bird was recorded. Periodically trend reports have been produced that show the changing patterns of garden use by season and the upturns and downturns in the frequency of sightings of different species.
